Born in the Cradle of Civilization Connecting People Through Creativity
Archaeological excavations indicate the presence of communities living within the borders of Urfa between 9600 and 8200 BCE. Göbeklitepe, known for its T-shaped stone structures, is of great significance as it demonstrates that belief existed before settled life, and symbolism before writing. These structures are regarded as the oldest conscious traces left by humanity on Earth.
Göbeklitepe is also considered one of the earliest sacred sites in human history, revealing that hunter-gatherer societies possessed abstract thinking and ritual practices. The symbols carved onto the T-shaped pillars show that these communities conveyed their relationship with nature, life, and the sacred through a symbolic language.
In this work, created using a layered glass technique, figures symbolizing fertility as well as depictions of snakes and similar animals are illustrated on Göbeklitepe’s characteristic T forms using rice decoupage paper. The base supporting the glass is designed by drawing inspiration from the stone forms and textures of the period, employing Travertine and Zeugma stone effect products.
